We are looking to appoint someone to work as part of a small team to carry out operational duties associated with burial and cremation services including the inspection, testing, recording, maintenance, repair and reinstatement of headstones and memorials in the Council’s cemeteries.

The postholder must be able to provide a sympathetic and client focussed service and respond to requests for the Section’s services by assisting members of the public and other service users, ensuring a reverent, courteous and helpful approach is provided at all times.

The post holder will be based at one of the 5 cemeteries in Hull, however you will be expected to work, as directed, at any one of the other cemeteries that are located across the city with no firm base site.

Primarily you will be carrying out safety testing of Cemetery memorials in the City Council’s cemeteries, ensuring they are safe and maintained to a high standard. Also, you will be monitoring the work carried out by memorial masons in accordance with the Council’s Memorial Masons’ Registration Scheme and the services’ relevant policies, procedures and risk assessments.

You will perform a full range of other duties and operations, these include assisting with the preparation and backfilling of graves and other attendant duties associated with burials and cremations in order to provide an efficient and sensitive burial and cremation service. Also as required, undertaking the duties of a Chapel Attendant at the Crematorium and to inter or scatter remains, with or without families present. This post must ensure that the funerals run according to plan as the impact an error can have on the families’ bereavement process and council reputation is immeasurable and irreparable.

A proven track record of a commitment to high levels of customer care is essential, along with the ability to deal tactfully and discreetly with customers from a wide range of cultures and background in what may be emotionally challenging situations. Good accuracy skills which include an attention to detail are also essential as well as having the ability to use plant, machinery and tools (hand and mechanical).

The post holder must be able to obtain correct information from customers in emotional circumstances, be smart in appearance, accurate, assertive and demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills.
